Good news everyone :)

As I no longer have time to work on Metadata Browser’s development, I decided to do what I should have done a long time ago – publish the source code!

Have fun with it, and don’t forget to make your updates available to the community 😉

The code is written in VB6.

I will ask you in advance to apologize me for any ugly spaghetti code that you might find. Please bear in mind that I had no knowledge of VB6 when I started working on this tool, a few years ago.

As promised earlier this year, Senthil Raj – author of the celebrated Object Tracking Tool, has kindly agreed to merge his application with Metadata Browser.

After much coding and testing, time has come to unveil this brand new application, which you will surely find very useful. Click here to download it.

So, what’s new?

  • Well, there’s obviously the new and more powerful than ever Object Tracker. You can use it both to extract a simple list of objects in your project, and to generate documentation such as format, alias, formula, dimensionality, transformation and condition for metrics; lookup table, forms, child & parent relationships for attributes, etc. It behaves more or less like the Project Documentation Wizard from Desktop, with the huge difference that you can actually run all sorts of analysis on the Excel files generated by Metadata Browser, and you simply can’t do it with the HTML files generated by Desktop.
  • Another upgrade that you requested is the LDAP and NT authentication modes. They are now available at login.
  • Talking about the connection window, Metadata Browser is now capable of reading the most recent username that you have used for a certain project, from the registry. This will make it easier for you to login.

While the merge with Object Tracking Tool is still in development, I am proud to introduce the new and improved version of Metadata Browser, which you can download here: MBsetupV2.0.exe

Improved Documentation Tool
New properties are now retrieved for common object types:

  • Metrics: dimensionality, condition, transformation, smart (yes/no)
  • Attributes: form, lookup table, child & parent relations
  • Filters: expression
  • Prompts: item list

Change Journal Tools
This new function only works with MicroStrategy version 9.0 or higher and it either shows the Change Journal entries for a single object or for all the objects in a particular folder.

God Mode
If you have admin rights you can connect using “God Mode” and thus gain access to hidden system files. An interesting use (found during the test phase) is to navigate to System Objects\Columns and make dependency searches directly on Columns.

First of all I would like to thank you for your feedback and encouragements after the release of Metadata Browser v1.0 beta!

For those learning about Metadata Browser for the first time, let me say that this is an application that enables any user to navigate through a project, retrieve and export components, dependents and recurring dependents, and search by object ID.

New features

  • Documentation Tool (requested)
    Ever wanted to get a detailed list of the objects created or modified for a specific demand? Look no further!
    Simply select the folder where those objects or their shortcuts* are and click on the “Documentation” button. You will get an exportable list that shows all kind of useful information about your objects (i.e. alias, format and formula for Metrics, mandatory flag for Filters and Prompts, and many others).
  • Object Type Count (requested)
    This function shows the count for each object type in the selected folder.

* Creating folders with shortcuts for each demand or release is a good practice. It also saves you a lot of time when copying those objects to other projects via Object Manager.

Fixed issues

  • The windows can be resized (requested). In the beta versions they had a fixed size.
  • All object types should be recognized now and an appropriate icon should be displayed. I’ll come back with an article on how to do this via VBA in SDK.
  • The buttons were replaced by a slick looking toolbar (requested).
  • A manual is now available.

About donations

Surprisingly enough, I got more messages encouraging me to monetize this tool than I got new requirements.

Since money is not why I started working on Metadata Browser, I resist the suggestions of attaching a price tag to it. Nevertheless, if you so feel inclined to make a donation then you now have this opportunity.

This is a read only application. Using it will cause no changes to your Metadata.
